In the Religion by Region Project, the states of Alaska, Oregon, and Washington make up the Pacific Northwest. The region's ethos is shaped by the encounter of a relatively small, primarily urban population with a vast and beautiful landscape. The Pacific Northwest is an "open religious environment." Here fewer people (37%) affiliate with a religious institution than in any other region of the country. More adults respond "none" when asked their religious identity (25%) than in any other region. Those participating in church, synagogue, temple or mosque are distributed among many different religious bodies. The region's pattern of relative predominance among these bodies diverges in significant ways from the national. With low levels of religious adherence and no dominant religious reference group, the Pacific Northwest presents a highly elastic religious reality. |
